If you still prefer TV channels but miss the flexibility of streaming TV, HDHomeRun might be the right solution for you. The new “HDHomeRun Record” app will turn an Android TV device such as Nvidia Shield into a full DVR, letting you record shows.
HDHomeRun Record for Android TV
HDHomeRun lets you watch TV channels on many different devices, including Android, iOS, PC, Android TV and Amazon FireTV. To get started you need an HDHomeRun TV tuner, which starts at around $90. Until now you also had to build a dedicated PC or set up network storage to record TV programs.
The new “HDHomeRun Record” app for Google’s Android TV operating system makes the DVR solution more flexible. You can now use a box like Nvidia Shield to record TV programs directly to the internal storage. You can watch your recordings on the TV via Nvidia Shield or on other devices in your home through the “HDHomeRun View” app.
SiliconDust who is responsible for the HDHomeRun project recommends Nvidia Shield Pro (500GB) but you can also use other Android TV based devices with an Ethernet port, USB 3.0, and an external hard drive connected.
Other updates and more to come
In its May update SiliconDust has furthermore released an update for the HDHomeRun View app used to watch your live channels and recorded content. It now has a new “Recorded” menu.
A new recording feature for sports lets you program the DVR to record all games or “games with a specific team playing”.
The team is still working on adding DRM support for channels, live TV pause/rewind, and an HDHomeRun View app for Mac OS X.
