Apple introduced picture-in-picture for video on iPad last year with iOS 9. Netflix has been slow to embrace it but with the latest update Netflix has now added full support. It works with recent iPads.
Watch Netflix while multi-tasking
Netflix is usually quick to add new features to its apps so it is unclear why it has taken so long to add support for picture-in-picture. Nevertheless, here it is with the latest app update (version 8.7.0).
Picture-in-picture lets you minimize the video to one of the four corners of the screen while multitasking on your iPad. To enable it you just press the home button while watching Netflix. You can resize the window and swipe it temporarily to the side if you want to use the full area of the screen.
PiP functionality works with iPad Pro, iPad Air, and iPad mini 2, 3 and 4. Older iPads are out of luck. Netflix says that you also need iOS 9.3.2 or later.
The updated app from Netflix is available from the App Store now.
