Popular video player VLC has arrived on Windows 10 as a universal app (UWP) that works across PCs, tablets and phones. VLC will also soon hit Xbox One, HoloLens, Surface Hub, and Windows 8.1.
VLC for Windows 10
With Windows 10 Microsoft laid the foundation for universal apps that run on devices ranging from PCs to phones – and soon Xbox One, too. The creators of VLC have embraced it.
VLC for Windows 10 has been released in beta but it already includes most of the familiar features, including support for most video formats, subtitles, mini-player, network shares, and picture-in-picture. It also supports Cortana voice controls, Live Tiles, Pining and Continuum in Windows 10 as well as a "Dark Theme".
One thing that is not yet supported is DVD and Blu-ray playback. The team says that Microsoft has yet to add support in the universal app API. 4K video playback, on the other hand, is supported.
Coming to Xbox One and HoloLens
Xbox One will soon receive an update to enable universal apps designed for Windows 10. Once that happens, VLC will be ready. You can see VLC in development for Xbox One below.
- ”The Xbox One version should be out this summer, when the store is open to 3rd party UWP applications” says VLC.
VLC is also coming to PCs, tablets, and phones running Windows 8.1 as well as Surface Hub in July. Lastly, VLC is coming to HoloLens, Microsoft’s “augmented reality” headset that you can wear. A brief demonstration of VLC on HoloLens is included below.
VLC for Windows 10 is free and can be downloaded here. Be aware that it is a brand new app in beta, not an update.
