Plex has updated its Windows 8 app and completely rebuilt it for Windows 10. The universal app works on PCs and supports Cortana, Continuum, and more. A coming update will make it run on mobile, too.
Plex for Windows 10
Plex is a software platform for streaming your video files (and other media) to other devices. It is free to use but the company also offers a premium tier with more features.
Plex has now embraced Microsoft’s UWP (Universal Windows Platform) to build a new Windows 10 app “from ground up”. The new app has a fully revamped user interface that is designed to scale across a range of devices and screen sizes.
The app supports PCs running Windows 10 but Plex notes that it needs a little more time to optimize it for mobile. The mobile release will be “released later”, says Plex.
Plex for Windows 10 supports Microsoft’s voice assistant Cortana as well as Continuum that allows you to project the mobile screen to a second screen. Lastly, Plex mentions support for “Hubs and discovery” and “Mobile Sync”
With Plex now using UWP it means that, besides running on PCs and soon on mobiles, the new revamped app could potentially also come to Xbox One that now runs on a Windows 10 foundation. However, Plex has not commented on Xbox One yet.
You can download the new Plex app for Windows 10 from the Microsoft Store. Plex is also available on other devices such as Apple TV, Roku, Android TV, Xbox One, and PlayStation.
