Chromecast’s promised Fast Play feature will make videos load on the TV instantaneously. The plan was to roll it out via an update in early 2016 but it has been delayed, according to a report by Android Police.
Coming later this year
When Google announced Chromecast 2 in September 2015 it promised to add a new “Fast Play” feature designed to instantly load videos by using some clever content prediction methods. The update was scheduled for “early 2016” but has still not been released.
Fast Play will basically pre-buffer content on the Chromecast device. The idea is that video will start playing instantaneously on the TV when you press the ‘cast’ button on your smartphone or tablet.
Google has been testing the feature together with Netflix but issues have apparently delayed the release. The company has not set a new release date but the Fast Play feature is still being worked on and Google is hoping to release it later this year, according to sources who spoke with Android Police.
Google also revealed yesterday that it has now sold a total of 30 million Chromecast devices. In May 2016, Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO, said that 25 million Chromecast devices had been sold.
