Philips MMD will launch a range of new PC monitors at the IFA show in Berlin next month but has announced details on the new monitors ahead of the show. There is a new curved 40” monitor, a C6 series of thin-bezel monitors as well as E8 and E7 monitors with support for wide color gamut.
New PC monitors from Philips
The new 40” monitor will, according to Philips MMD, be the largest curved PC monitor with 4K resolution on the market. It will expand the line-up as a larger alternative to the current 34” version.
Philips has yet to reveal the model name but says that it will come with built-in speakers and a tilt function.
The company will also launch a new C7 series. These monitors have the slimmest bezel of any Philips monitor to date. Philips explains that the monitors “have no frame on three sides”. However, as can be seen from the picture below there is still a thin bezel.
Besides C7, Philips will introduce a C6 series that "is borderless on all four sides." C6 will be available in 24 and 27” sizes with 1920x1080 and 2560x1440 resolution, respectively.
The monitors will be showcased for the first time at IFA 2016 in early September.
Wide color gamut monitors
At IFA 2016, Philips also intends to launch a new E8 series of monitors. E8 will be available in 24 and 27” sizes, both with 2560x1440 resolution. Philips says that these monitors support wide color gamut - or “UltraColor” as Philips prefers to call it.
The company cites a figure of 90-95% NTSC color space coverage. However, the NTSC color space it not used in practice and it is not clear how large a portion of AdobeRGB or DCI-P3 the monitors can cover.
Additionally, Philips will add two 27 and 31.5” curved screens with Full HD resolution to the line-up. Philips says that its wide color gamut monitors will be cheaper than most competing brands’ models.
To utilize wide color gamut you need an operating system and applications that support the same color gamut - else colors will look wrong. Newer versions of Windows and Mac OS X both support wide color gamut standards.
Lastly, Philips will add a 31.5” model to the E7 line, which is already available in Europe in 24 and 27”. E7 supports “UltraColor” - that is, wide color gamut - but covers a slightly lower percentage of the NTSC color space (85%).
