Unlike Netflix, Amazon, HBO and others, Hulu has for years offered the option to watch some of its content for free with ads. No more. Hulu will switch to a subscription-only service.
Hulu ends free streaming
After nine years, Hulu will eliminate its free tier to become a subscription service. However, it will still serve ads to those who pay $7.99 a month. To get rid of ads you pay $11.99 a month. Just like before.
- “For the past couple years, we’ve been focused on building a subscription service that provides the deepest, most personalized content experience possible to our viewers. As we have continued to enhance that offering with new originals, exclusive acquisitions, and movies, the free service became very limited and no longer aligned with the Hulu experience or content strategy,” said Hulu to Variety.
The free content will instead be moved to Yahoo View.
Time Warner announced only a few days ago that it has acquired a 10% stake in Hulu to be involved in Hulu’s live TV service that is expected to go live in 2017. Before, Hulu was co-owned by Walt Disney, 20th Century Fox and Comcast.
