A few years ago, we witnessed the launch of the first 21:9-format PC monitors. LG has been leading this segment for the last three years, the company said at IFA. It is now adding three PC monitors in 34 and 38-inch sizes. One of them has Google Cast.
38” LG 38UC99 for the office
The first monitor is the 38” 38UC99 with a resolution of 3840x1600 pixels. It is based on an IPS LCD panel and can cover 99% of the classic sRGB color gamut. LG says that it has designed the monitor to accommodate mixed office work.
LG adds that 38UC99 has built-in USB Type-C ports and 2x 10W speakers. You can get sound either from the PC via a cable or enjoy music from a phone or tablet via Bluetooth.
- “LG is the number one brand in the 21:9 monitor space because we were first to recognize that consumers are adopting a new way of working and playing that put them ahead of the competition whether that’s working or playing,” said Brian Kwon, president of LG.
34” LG 34UC79G for gaming
The second model is 34” 34UC79G that has been designed for gaming. It has a resolution of 3440x1440 pixels and is the first PC monitor with a curved 21:9 format that supports 144 Hz frame rate, says LG. It has a response time of 1 ms, support for AMD FreeSync, and is based on an IPS LCD panel. LG adds that it made an effort to reduce input lag to a minimum.
34UC79G has height and tilt adjustment. The company tells us that it also “offers a crosshair option which adds a fixed target to the center of the screen to increase accuracy during FPS games and a mouse line hook to prevent drag resistance caused by the mouse’s cable”.
34” LG 34UM79G with Google Cast
Lastly, there is a flat 34” monitor named 34UM79G. It has been designed for gaming but no longer features AMD FreeSync.
On the other hand 34UM79G it comes with Google Cast built-in. LG has released very few details on this monitor so it is not clear if the Google Cast system supports both video and audio, or audio only.
European pricing details were not announced but in the US, LG’s 38UC99 will be available in September for $1499, 34UC79G in October for $699, and 34UM79G in November for $599. The monitors will be exhibited for the first time during IFA 2016 in Berlin. For more details see LG’s German website.
