Sony has today released the next major software update for PlayStation 4. Software version 4.0 adds HDR compatibility to all PS4 consoles. It also adds a refreshed UI, folders, new Quick and Share menus, and more.

We detailed most of the changes in the PS4 software update 4.0 here. However, back then Sony told us to “stay tuned for additional info on what to expect” and now the company has confirmed what those features are.
First and foremost, this is the update that will add HDR (High Dynamic Range) compatibility to all PS4 consoles out there. So if you own a PS4 and a HDR-capable TV you can start enjoying your games in HDR as soon as manufacturers push out game updates. There is a new HDR settings menu under “Video Output Settings”.
For upcoming PS4 Pro owners the update will also enable 1080p Remote Play, 1080p Share Play, 1080p 30/60fps live broadcasting on YouTube and 1080p 30fps live broadcasting on Twitch. These features are also available on standard PS4s but not at the same high resolution/frame rate.
Additionally, the Quick Menu gets music controls for Spotify. The “What’s New” and “Content Info” screens have been refreshed as part of the general user interface refresh that version 4.0 introduces.
Lastly, Sony has made it possible to transfer data – games, user info, saved data – over a wired LAN between two PS4 consoles. That should be useful if you are planning on upgrading to PS4 Pro. Of course, you can also do it over the cloud but a LAN cable will be much faster.
