Vudu to introduce HDR10 streaming in addition to Dolby Vision

15 Sep 2016 | Rasmus Larsen |

Vudu is currently offering movies only in the Dolby Vision HDR format but not because of an exclusive deal. The streaming service will start supporting the HDR10 format, too, according to Forbes.

Vudu to support both HDR formats

The emergence of two HDR formats – and soon a third – has raised concern about the beginning of a new format war. However, Dolby Vision is more and more being positioned as the premium format of the two while HDR10 will bring HDR to the masses.

It seemed like Vudu had chosen side by supporting Dolby Vision exclusively for its movie catalog. That is not the case, the company told John Archer from Forbes, as it expects to add support for HDR10 later.

- “Dolby Vision is the highest quality HDR solution, as well as the first to market. Vudu has not committed to any exclusivity related to Dolby Vision, but, in our quest to deliver the best customer experience and to be a leader in new technology delivery, we launched with the solution that was available before there was an HDR10 standard. We expect to support HDR10 as well, so that we can deliver the best experience, to as many customers as possible,“ Vudu said in a statement to Forbes.

That is obviously great news for consumers in the US who own a TV from a brand such as Samsung, Sony or Panasonic. Dolby Vision is currently supported only on TVs from LG and Vizio and as a result Vudu’s highest-quality movie streams have only been available to owners of LG and Vizio 2016 TVs.

Vudu began streaming in Dolby Vision and Atmos in October 2015. Last month, the streaming service added movies in Dolby Vision/Atmos from Universal to the catalog.

When exactly Vudu will press play on the HDR10 streams was not confirmed.
