This is what we call a positive surprise. Oppo’s first Ultra HD Blu-ray player – the one we reported on last week – could become the first player to support Dolby Vision. It is technically capable but Oppo is currently awaiting certification from Dolby, according to AVforums.
Dolby Vision on UHD Blu-ray
UDP-203 is Oppo’s first Ultra HD Blu-ray player. We first heard about it last week and yesterday Oppo hosted a briefing for the press in the UK. UDP-203 will be joined by a higher-end UDP-205 later and both are technically capable of supporting both HDR10 and Dolby Vision.
Oppo explains that it is using a customized chip developed by MediaTek (the quad-core OP8591) to enable support for both HDR formats. However, Oppo is still awaiting certification from Dolby. The company is hoping to add support with a firmware update before the end of this year but it will take some effort so the timeline could change.
MediaTek is also developing system chips for certain Smart TVs, including all Android TVs. FlatpanelsHD has learned that next year’s MediaTek SoC (system-on-chip) for Android TV will support Dolby Vision, which should help expand support for Dolby’s flavor of HDR to more TVs.
