Netflix is aware that many customers share a password. This is allowed for family but not friends. It is “something you have to learn to live with”, the CEO said. Netflix has no plans to start cracking down on it.
Netflix accepts password sharing
Netflix has started cracking down of unblockers; a fight that the company appears to be winning. The company will, on the other hand, not take an aggressive stance on password sharing.
- "Password sharing is something you have to learn to live with, because there's so much legitimate password sharing, like you sharing with your spouse, with your kids .... so there's no bright line, and we're doing fine as is." said Netflix CEO, Reed Hastings.
He added that "in terms of , no plans on making any changes there".
Netflix currently offers three plans. The cheapest is limited to SD quality and 1 simultaneous stream, the second to HD quality and 2 simultaneous streams, and the third to 4K quality and 4 simultaneous streams.
3.57 million new subscribers in Q3
The comments came on Monday as Netflix released its quarterly financial report. The company confirmed that it added 3.57 million new subscribers in Q3 2016, bringing the total up to 86.74 million.
The company expects to add 5.2 million new customers in the fourth quarter.
Netflix says that its growth continues to be fueled by original series such as ‘Stranger Things’ and ‘Narcos’. That is why Netflix will continue to commission even more content. In 2017, the company expects to release over 1000 hours of exclusive content, up from over 600 hours this year.
