Even before the new “UltraFine” monitors from LG, created for the Apple Mac, have even been made available on the market, the partners have cut prices by 25 percent. This is a reaction to the MacBook Pro “dongle” backlash.
More affordable Mac monitors
Apple is out of the monitor business so it has partnered with LG to create two 5K and 4K monitors that connect to a Mac via Thunderbolt 3 and USB Type-C.
After unveiling the new Macbook Pro that feature only four Thunderbolt 3 ports and no legacy ports, many complained that the full transition to a new universal port came too early, and that it would require too many dongles.
Apple has now responded to the criticism.
- “We recognize that many users, especially pros, rely on legacy connectors to get work done today and they face a transition. We want to help them move to the latest technology and peripherals, as well as accelerate the growth of this new ecosystem,” said Apple. “Through the end of the year, we are reducing prices on all USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 peripherals we sell, as well as the prices on Apple's USB-C adapters and cables.”
Apple adds that there “has had more orders for the new MacBook Pro than any other pro notebook before”.
The Thunderbolt 3 standard in the new Macbook Pro has several “alt modes” (alternative modes) that can carry standard video signals (such as HDMI or DisplayPort) as well as data, audio, and power. These modes do not require dongles but instead just a cable with one type of connector at one end and another type of connector at the other end.
However, in response Apple has cut prices of all dongles and the LG 5K and 4K “UltraFine” monitors by 25 percent. They are now available for $974 (previously $1300) and $524 (previously $700). The reduced prices will last until January.
This also means that the LG 5K monitor is more affordable than the old “Thunderbolt display” that was Apple’s last monitor.
