USB-C can deliver data, video, audio, and even power, and over the last year we have seen PCs with USB-C emerge. HP’s new 27-inch '4K Envy' monitor can be connected to a laptop only using USB-C for video and power.
HP 4K monitor
Apple has put the spotlight on USB-C after it launched the new MacBook Pro. While it technically uses Thunderbolt 3 ports, these are based on the USB Type-C connector and allow you to plug in any type of USB-C device, including a monitor. You no longer need a separate DisplayPort, HDMI or VGA cable.
HP’s new 27-inch '4K Envy' is one such monitor. When connected to for example the MacBook Pro, the monitor receives a 4K video signal and can send back up to 60W to charge the laptop over a single cable. The monitor still needs to be connected to a power outlet.
HP’s monitor features an IPS LCD panel with 3840x2160 pixel resolution, 99% sRGB color gamut, and up to 60Hz refresh rate (plus FreeSync). Besides USB-C there is 1x DisplayPort 1.2, 1x HDMI 2.0, and 1x HDMI 1.4 for connecting the monitor to other devices.
As you can see from the photos, the monitor has a thin bezel around the LCD panel and an aluminum stand. The stand offers tilt adjustment only.
