Last year, the YouTube app disappeared from 2012 Sony TVs and the time has now come for Blu-ray players and home cinema systems of the same generation. The app will cease functioning on February 15.
Google has made changes
We have witnessed numerous apps disappear from Smart TVs and other internet-connected AV products. Sony is far alone in this regard.
This time, however, it appears to be caused by changes made by Google who owns YouTube. In April 2015, YouTube started transitioning from a Flash video player to a HTML5-based player, which affected many types of products. Back then, the YouTube app disappeared from Apple TV2 and Google TV as well as certain game consoles, Smart TVs and mobile devices.
Sony tried to keep the app alive on its 2012 Smart TVs but in vain. Later this month, all Blu-ray players and home cinema systems with built-in Blu-ray will be affected.
App will be removed this month
The app has caused problems for users for some time.
- ”You may have been experiencing symptoms such as a black screen being displayed and disrupted video playback, when using the YouTube app on Sony's 2012 audio and video products.,” said Sony.
It has apparently not been possible to solve the issue so Sony has decided to take the consequence.
- ”Due to these issues, Sony has decided to remove the YouTube app from these devices after the 15th February 2017.”
The app will stop functioning on February 15 on all products listed below.
