YouTube has passed an incredible milestone, Google announced on Monday. Viewers on YouTube now watch more than 1 billion hours of videos every day.
10-fold increase since 2012
Google’s YouTube has increased its viewership numbers 10-fold in less than 5 years. To stimulate growth the company took steps to individualize the experience, which means that the company gathers data on your viewing patterns to serve more relevant videos and ads.
1 billion hours per day is an incredible milestone when you consider that it is just one player. Wall Street Journal notes that YouTube is on pace to eclipse all the US-based TV broadcasters combined.
For comparison, Netflix’s subscribers watched 125 million hours of videos per day (data from early 2016). That numbers has likely increased in the past year. The difference is of course that users pay to watch Netflix whereas YouTube is free.
Google has said that more than half of all views on YouTube happen on a mobile device. The company has also started an initiative to make the service more attractive to watch on the big screen by rolling out support for 4K resolution, HDR (High Dynamic Range) and even HFR (High Frame Rate).
Music videos top the lists
A list of the most watched videos on YouTube reveals that PSY’s ’Gangnam Style’ is still the most watched video. Music videos in general top the lists.
