PlayStation 3 production will reportedly end this month

After a little more than 10 years on the market, Sony is ready to phase out the PlayStation 3. The company will reportedly end production of PS3 in Japan later this month, according to Gematsu.

This is the end for PS3

Sony released its last game for PlayStation 3 last year and has started discontinuing services on the console. PlayStation 4, and more recently PlayStation 4 Pro, have arrived to take over.

Still, it always makes us feel a little nostalgic when a game console reaches end-of-life. We have spent numerous hours playing games on PS3 that was a powerhouse at the time it came out. It is estimated that Sony has sold more than 83 million PS3 consoles since launch. That is significantly fewer than PS2 that sold more than 155 million during its run. PS2 remains the best-selling game console of all time.

PlayStation 3 was also one of the first devices to feature a Blu-ray drive. Sony later released “Slim” and “Super Slim” versions of the console.

Sony’s official page for the last-remaining version of PS3 says that “shipments are scheduled to end soon”. A game ship in Fukuoka has tweeted that production will end in March, according to Gematsu. Once the last console has been produced it is only a matter of time before stocks dry up.

This appears to be the end of the road for PlayStation 3 but we are sure that gamers will continue to enjoy games on PS3 consoles in living rooms across the globe for many years to come.
