The world’s first 8K monitor can be yours for $5000 dollars. Dell has launched the 32” UP3218K that was first announced at CES 2017.
World’s first 8K monitor
The first 8K TV was launched a couple of years ago and now Dell is bringing the first 8K PC monitor to the market. Of course, 8K resolution in a 32-inch PC monitor requires far higher pixel density; 279 pixels per inch to be exact.
Dell’s UP3218K is based on a 32-inch IPS LCD panel with 7680x4320 pixels and 10-bit colors. 8K resolution has four times as many pixels as 4K resolution. The IPS panel is relatively contrast-poor (1300:1) but has wider viewing angles than the VA LCD counterparts. Dell says that the monitor has full support for AdobeRGB and sRGB as well as 98% coverage of the DCI-P3 color gamut.
The monitor comes with a price tag of $5000 dollars so it is certainly not an affordable option for most users. Dell imagines that there is a small group of professionals working with video, graphics, CAD, design, and other tasks, who are willing to pay the price to be first movers.
It is perhaps worth pointing out that there are some limitations to 8K resolution currently. You obviously need a powerful graphics card, and to deliver 7680x4320 pixels in 60Hz via a PC link you need to connect two DisplayPort 1.3 cables running in dual-link that stitch together the two streams. This can lead to tearing in some applications.
The monitor looks like a classic Dell product and also features an ergonomic base that offer height, tilt, swivel, and pivot adjustment options. We shared our first impressions of the UP3218K during CES 2017.
