Apple will not abandon the standalone monitor market. In fact, the company will launch a redesigned Mac Pro and new a pro display in 2018, the company confirmed to Daring Fireball and others.
New iMac, Mac Pro & a monitor
In very unconventional manner, Apple invited five journalists to a roundtable discussion to share an update on the future of the Mac. No products were shown but the company did say that it has a new iMac slated for release “this year”.
The company also confirmed that it is working on a complete redesign of the Mac Pro along with an Apple-branded pro display. These products will launch sometime in 2018.
- “As part of doing a new Mac Pro — it is, by definition, a modular system — we will be doing a pro display as well. Now you won’t see any of those products this year; we’re in the process of that,” Phil Schiller, Apples SVP of worldwide marketing told John Gruber of Daring Fireball.
Last year, it was reported that Apple was out of the standalone display business. The company instead partnered with Korean LG to launch LG-branded 5K and 4K “UltraFine” monitors, designed for Mac. Since launch, customers have complained that the monitors fail when placed close to WiFi routers at the home. LG has promised to fix the issue. It is not clear if this has prompted Apple to pick up the torch anew.
No other details regarding the new display were shared but we think it is safe to assume that the monitor will feature at least 4K or 5K resolution.
