Hollywood hackers threaten to release upcoming Disney movie

16 May 2017 | Rasmus Larsen |

The Hollywood hacker case has taken a new dramatic turn with the hackers threatening to release an upcoming Disney movie, likely ’Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’. Disney has refused to negotiate with the hackers, according to Hollywood Reporter.

Update 26.5.2017: Disney says that it was a bluff

First Netflix, now Disney

An individual or group of hackers that go by the name “thedarkoverlord” recently stole several upcoming seasons of TV series from a postproduction sound studio, including Netflix’s ‘Orange is the New Black’. Netflix refused to pay what the hackers demanded so they released the episodes onto the bittorrent network.

It is not clear if the perpetrators stole the upcoming Disney movie from the same postproduction sound studio or even if it is the same group of hackers. However, they indicated earlier this month that something was incoming.

The hack was confirmed by Disney CEO, Bob Iger, who told Hollywood Reporter that the hackers had contacted Disney. They demanded Disney pay a “huge sum” in bitcoins not to release the upcoming movie on the torrent network. Bob Iger did not not disclose the title Deadline claims to know that it is ’Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’.

Disney has, according to Bob Iger, refused to pay anything. The hackers are threatening to release the movie in 20-minute chunks until Disney changes its mind.
