Dolby Cinema coming to France, Middle East - expanding in the Netherlands

Dolby’s cinema, which combines Dolby Vision HDR with Dolby Atmos sound, is coming seven locations in France, three more in the Netherlands, and “multiple locations” in the Middle East.

Seven locations in France

Dolby is bringing HDR cinema to more countries after the company has seen success in the US and China. With its cinema initiative, the company is trying to build a strong position as a technology partner in both sound and picture. All major Hollywood studios are supporting the initiative.

Dolby Cinemas are equipped with laser projection systems that can reproduce pictures in ‘Dolby Vision’, which is the company’s premium HDR format, as well as sound systems that deliver ‘Dolby Atmos’ object-based sound.

The company is partnering with Les Cinémas Gaumont Pathé to open 10 Dolby Cinema locations, seven in France and three more in the Netherlands, where Dolby Cinema was already available. Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Massy (south of Paris) locations have been confirmed. The first locations are expected to be open this fall.

- “Les Cinémas Gaumont Pathé’s presence throughout France and the Netherlands will introduce Dolby Cinema to more consumers in Europe who seek out the best in entertainment,” said Doug Darrow, Senior Vice President, Cinema Business Group, Dolby Laboratories. “We are confident that moviegoers will go back again and again for the spectacular experience across all genres that only Dolby Cinema can deliver.”

Multiple locations in the Middle East

In late March, the company also confirmed plans to open Dolby Cinema locations across the Middle East in a partnership with Reel Cinemas. The first two locations will be a flagship cinema in Dubai Mall and another in Dubai Marina Mall.

- "This marks another milestone for Dolby Cinema as we expand our global reach spanning across the United States, China, Europe, and now the Middle East," said Doug Darrow, Senior Vice President, Cinema Business Group, Dolby Laboratories. "We look forward to working with Reel Cinemas to bring spectacular moviegoing experiences to audiences who seek out the best in entertainment."

Dolby’s sound and picture technologies are also available in the living room. LG, Sony, TCL, and others have, or are, planning to launch Dolby Vision-enabled TVs. LG’s 2017 OLED TVs also come with Dolby Atmos onboard and several manufacturers have launched Dolby Atmos soundbars.
