After having launched its 'Video' app on Samsung Smart TVs, Apple TV4, and Fire TV, Facebook is now bringing the app to TVs from Sony, Philips, Bang & Olufsen as well as media players such as Nvidia Shield. The Android TV app also includes a new ‘Games’ section that will expand to all apps.
Facebook Video on Android TV
With ‘Facebook Video’ the social media company is looking to challenge YouTube. The app is available in 190 countries and 35 languages, and is now expanding its reach to Android TV.
Android TV is Google’s operating system for TVs. Sony, Philips, Bang & Olufsen, Sharp, TCL, Hisense, and other companies are all building TVs based on Android TV. In addition, the operating system is used in media players such as Nvidia Shield and Xiaomi’s Mi Box.
With the app you can watch the rich catalog of videos uploaded to Facebook every day. The app does not show your newsfeed, as it is intended to deliver a “leanback” video experience on the big screen.
Facebook has also added a new ‘Games’ section that surfaces gaming-related videos, including new game trailers, live eSports, and developers’ videos. The games section will officially launch on June 10 on all platforms but is already available in the Android TV app, it seems.
Facebook Video was already available on TV platforms such as tvOS (Apple TV), FireOS (Fire TV), and Tizen (Samsung 2015+ Smart TVs).
