Samsung’s two Dolby Atmos-enabled soundbars are getting much-needed support for DTS 5.1 surround via a firmware update. Until now DTS has been down-converted to stereo.
DTS 5.1 update
When we reviewed Samsung K950 in late 2016 one of our main concerns was that it lacked support for DTS 5.1 surround, effectively meaning that any Blu-ray disc with only a DTS 5.1 soundtrack would play in stereo only.
Samsung has finally addressed the issue with its latest firmware update (version 3113) that adds full support for DTS in 5.1 channels. This is of course great news for current owners that can now enjoy better sound outside of Dolby’s Atmos format.

The update is available for both the HW-K950 flagship model (HW-K960 in some regions) and the more affordable HW-K850.
On the downside, the soundbars do not yet support DTS:X, which is DTS’s answer to Dolby’s Atmos. Competitors’ Dolby Atmos soundbar also typically lack support DTS.
The firmware update is available through the Samsung Multiroom app for iOS and Android. First you need to add the speaker to the list and then navigate to ’Software update’.
