We have seen the prototypes but if you are waiting for the first consumer OLED TVs that can be rolled up you will only have to wait 3 more years. LG aims to mass produce 55-75” rollable OLED TVs in 2020, according to Business Korea.
Rollable OLED TVs
LG.Display – LG’s display division – last month showcased a 77” transparent OLED display that can be rolled up. However, before these screens can be sold to consumers there are technological and production-related problems that have to be solved.
LG.Display aims to mass produce on “a full scale” OLED TV panels that can be rolled up beginning in 2020. The company is said to be targeting 55 and 75” formats, according to a report by Business Korea. LG has not confirmed the details.
The displays will be produced at the new ‘P10’ plant in Paju, South Korea. The new plant is expected to be operational from the first half of 2018 where it will mass produce more conventional OLED TV panels and small-size panels for handheld devices. LG has invested over $8 billion in the factory, according to OLED-Info.
- "Prices may vary somewhat depending on the appearances of rollable OLED TVs such as whether it is attached to a wall or a screen form," an official from LG Electronics told Business Korea.
The industry expects that rollable TVs will encourage people to install larger screens – that can be hidden when not in use – in living rooms.
LG.Display showcased its first rollable OLED display (18”) in 2015 and has since ramped up investments in the project. The latest 77” prototype, which is also transparent, can be seen in the picture above.
A 55” OLED TV that can be rolled up is expected to cost more than $25.000 dollars at launch. The first large-size OLED TVs were launched in 2012 for around $8000-9000 dollars. LG OLED TVs are today available starting from around $1800 dollars.
