Dell’s latest monitor is large and curved but unlike most other monitors in this format, it is not designed for gaming. The 38-inch Dell U3818DW is a monitor designed for work. It is also one of the first monitors with USB Type-C for video input.
24:10 aspect ratio
The monitor does not feature FreeSync or any other gaming-related technologies. Dell envisions that you instead buy it to replace a multi-monitor setup on your desk.
At $1300 dollars, the U3818DW is certainly not cheap but large-size monitors rarely are. For the price you get 3840x1600 resolution in the 24:10 aspect ratio on a 38-inch IPS LCD panel. It supports the sRGB color space but not wide color spaces.
The true appeal here is of course the large, wide, and curved format. The monitor is also one of the first to offer a USB Type-C port for video input, besides HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.2. The USB Type-C port transmits power, audio, and video via a single cable. There is a height-adjustable base that also tilts and swivels as well as built-in speakers.
The monitor comes bundled with software to “customize screen layout for viewing multiple applications side-by-side with Dell Easy Arrange or to work on multiple tasks simultaneously with Picture-in-Picture and Picture-by-Picture features”.
Dell U3818DW is part of a growing trend towards large-size monitors that manufacturers hope can reinvigorate a PC monitor market that has largely stagnated. It is available now for $1300 dollars in the US and Ł1550 pounds in the UK.
