Hulu, Google, Sony, Amazon, and others want you to cut the cord and subscribe to live channels via a streaming service. You can now try Hulu’s “beta” service if you own Amazon’s Fire TV or Fire TV Stick.
Hulu live TV on Fire TV
Back in May 2017, Hulu launched a redesigned app along with a live TV service (in beta). At that time, it was available on a handful of devices such as Apple TV, Chromecast, iOS, Android, and Xbox One.
The redesigned app with the live TV service is now also available to try on Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, the company has announced.
Hulu’s live TV service gives you access to over 50 live channels, including CBS, Fox, ESPN, FX, and more, for $40 dollars per month. This price also includes access to Hulu’s streaming library with commercials as well as a Cloud DVR with 200 hours of storage.
Hulu’s service is the latest of many. Sony offers PlayStation Vue, Google offers YouTube TV, Amazon offers Amazon Channels, and Dish offers Sling TV. These are traditional TV bundles reimagined as apps for streaming, which offers flexibility to watch live channels on more devices.
These types of services have seen some traction, with Sling TV reportedly having around 2 million subscribers two and a half years after launch. However, the numbers pale in comparison to Netflix who is signing up millions of subscribers every quarter – 5.2 million in the last quarter alone – on a streaming service that scales globally.
The jury is still out on whether people want the traditional TV bundle packaged as an app but if you want to give it a shot to see for yourself you can now power up your Fire TV to check out Hulu’s live TV service. It is available as an update to the existing Hulu app. More information can be found at hulu.com.
