It took some time but the firmware to enable Dolby Vision support on the LG UP970 UHD Blu-ray player is now rolling out, making LG the second company to support Dolby Vision discs.
Update 6.2.2018: The update has been
re-released and now includes DV support for Netflix.
Update: LG has pulled the software. No release date for the updated version has been communicated.
Dolby Vision Blu-ray player
Earlier this year, LG launched the UP970 as one of the first UHD Blu-ray player to support Dolby Vision. Many had expected the Dolby Vision firmware to be ready by the time the first discs were released this summer but the company apparently needed a few extra months.
If you own the UP970 you can go to the settings menu and install the firmware (BD.37.767.70811.C) via the update section.
LG is the second company, after Oppo, to offer an UHD Blu-ray player with support for the Dolby Vision HDR format. The UP970 player is available in the US for $230 dollars and in Europe for 265 Euro.
Dolby Vision is a premium HDR format that offers some advantages over the HDR10 base format. Most major Hollywood studios have released, or have committed to releasing, Blu-ray discs in Dolby Vision. Titles include Despicable Me 1 and 2, The Fate of the Furious, Power Rangers, Transformers: The Last Knight, and Resident Evil: Vendetta, with more to come in the near future.
