Apple will start offering movies in 4K HDR quality through iTunes. This allows you to purchase movies in the best possible quality with a click on the remote. You will also get automatic upgrades of HD titles in your existing iTunes library.
iTunes to offer 4K HDR movies
iTunes has for several years offered some of the best 1080p HD quality available for streaming. Hopefully that tradition will continue now that Apple is starting to add 4K HDR titles to iTunes. These titles will be compressed in HEVC, which is said to be double as effective as MPEG4.
With the launch of the new Apple TV 4K hardware, Apple is adding a selection of 4K HDR movies to iTunes. It has yet to be confirmed in which regions it will be offered.
- “Customers will love watching stunning 4K HDR movies from an impressive catalog on iTunes, while also getting automatic upgrades of 4K HDR movies already in their iTunes library and enjoying 4K content on services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, coming soon,” said Eddy Cue.
Apple is collaborating with 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate, Paramount, Universal, Warner Bros. andSony Pictures. The only major Hollywood studio missing from the list is Disney.

The company also said that if you already own movies in HD quality you will automatically and free-of-charge get the 4K HDR version. Apple did the same when iTunes switched from 720p to 1080p but it nevertheless sets the company apart from the rest of the industry.
Movies in 4K HDR will cost the same as HD movies cost in the past.
