Apple releases tvOS 11.1, brings 'TV' app to more countries

01 Nov 2017 | Rasmus Larsen |

tvOS 11.1 focuses mostly on bug and performance fixes but also brings the ‘TV’ app to Sweden and Norway. Major new features will arrive with tvOS 11.2 later this year.

’TV’ app is expanding

The ‘TV’ app lets you discover and watch content from multiple services in one unified user interface. The app was initially available only in the US but expanded to Australia and Canada in September 2017, and is now also available in Sweden and Norway with the release of tvOS 11.1 and iOS 11.1

In Sweden, the TV app works with services such as SVT Play, Viaplay, Viafree, C More and Mubi. In Norway, it works with TV 2 Sumo, Viaplay, Cmore, Viafree and Mubi. The app works – and synchronizes between – Apple TV, iPhone, and iPad.

Apple has promised to also bring the app to Germany, France, and the UK but it is not clear if it is included in the 11.1 release for these regions.

Fixes for Krack, subtitles, Airpods

tvOS 11.1 includes a fix for the “Krack” WPA2 Wi-Fi vulnerability. FlatpanelsHD has discovered that the software also fixes a HDMI CEC related bug that would prevent Apple TV 4K from putting the TV into stand-by mode.

In addition, we have been told that it fixes a bug with subtitles in Netflix that would disappear approx. 10 minutes into a show on Apple TV 4K.

Apple notes that tvOS 11.1 fixes a bug that would prevent Airpods from connecting to Apple TV 4K.

Major new features such as “automatic mode switching to native frame rate and dynamic range” and restoring of the Unwatched category for home sharing are coming with tvOS 11.2 later this year. Apple has furthermore promised to bring Airplay 2 to tvOS and has said that Dolby Atmos support is “on the roadmap”.
