Dolby Vision coming to more affordable TVs through Vestel partnership

13 Nov 2017 | Rasmus Larsen |

Dolby has announced that it has signed a deal with TV manufacturer Vestel that will bring the Dolby Vision HDR technology to more affordable TVs in Europe. Vestel has the rights to produce TVs under licensed brands such as Toshiba, Hitachi, and Finlux.

Dolby Vision coming to more OLEDs

Turkey-based Vestel is one of Europe’s largest manufacturers of TVs. While it sells TVs under its own Vestel brand in some regions, a larger slice of its business involves selling under licensed brands.

Vestel manufactures and sells TVs in Europe under brands such as Toshiba, Finlux, Polaroid, Hitachi, RCA, Medion, Telefunken, and Electra. TVs from at least some of these brands will be sold with Dolby Vision support next year.

- “We recognise that Dolby is leading the way when it comes to creating state-of-the-art image and viewing experiences,” said Hakan Kutlu, VP of Marketing & Product Management, Vestel. ”As one of the biggest TV manufacturers in Europe, we are focused on delivering breath-taking visual experiences and taking consumer entertainment to the next level.”

The company said that Dolby Vision will be “featured across the entire range of Vestel’s Ultra HD (UHD) TV’s, including Vestel’s new range of OLED TVs”.

Bringing Dolby Vision to Europe

Dolby Vision is one of several HDR formats that deliver a much wider luminance range and a larger color space. The key difference is that it utilizes dynamic metadata to optimize picture quality on a scene-by-scene (or frame-by-frame) basis.

- ”We are thrilled to bring Dolby Vision to Vestel’s range of OLED and UHD TVs,” said Giles Baker, SVP, Consumer Entertainment Group, Dolby Laboratories. ”We look forward to collaborating with Vestel to bring the Dolby Vision experience to even more consumers across Europe.”

Vestel has already announced a Toshiba-branded OLED TV with Dolby Vision. Vestel is also exploring ways to bring the wallpaper OLED TV to market under the Toshiba brand.

Besides Vestel, companies such as Bang & Olufsen, LG, Loewe, Sony, TCL, and Vizio offer TVs with Dolby Vision support.

Netflix was name-dropped in the announcement so we assume that it will be one of the content sources on Vestel TVs. In addition, you can also get Dolby Vision content on UHD Blu-ray and from iTunes via the Apple TV 4K.

With CES 2018 coming up in January there is a good chance that we will know more soon. Vestel will exhibit in the main hall next to brands such as LG, Samsung, and Sony.
