Vudu launches HDR10 streaming support on TVs, Xbox, Roku & Nvidia Shield

27 Nov 2017 | Rasmus Larsen |

Vudu started offering content in Dolby Vision two years ago. It is now adding HDR10 support, which brings select HDR movies to Samsung and LG TVs, Xbox, Roku, and Nvidia Shield.

HDR10 and Dolby Vision

Vudu was the only major streaming service not to offer HDR10. The industry generally sees HDR10 as a base layer for HDR, whereas formats such as Dolby Vision and HDR10+ are regarded premium experiences. The lack of HDR10 support also prevented owners of non-Dolby Vision TVs to enjoy Vudu in High Dynamic Range.

No more. Vudu is now rolling out content in HDR10 format.

- “We’re excited to announce the addition of HDR10 support, which brings the color depth and richness of HDR to more devices than ever before. Our support of HDR10, which is quickly becoming a common feature on more and more 4K TVs and streaming devices, means more people can enjoy HDR and the best possible cinematic experience at home,” said Scott Blanksteen, VP of Product Management & Design, Vudu.

This means that you can enjoy movies in 4K resolution + HDR10 on compatible Samsung (2017) and LG (2016 & 2017) TVs, Xbox One S and One X as well as Roku 4K and Nvidia Shield devices. Nvidia has said that in order to watch Vudu in HDR10 you must update your Shield with the latest system software.

HDR10

- “Now, you can watch in 4K + HDR10 on compatible Samsung and LG TVs, Xbox One S and X, and Roku 4K and Nvidia Shield devices," the company said. ”With complete HDR support across both HDR10 and Dolby Vision formats, Vudu customers have more device choices from which to enjoy the latest in digital video technology. Users will automatically get the format that is compatible with their 4K + HDR TV or streaming device for the best possible picture.”

Vudu currently offers 36 movies in HDR10 format. The company offers a far more extensive catalog in Dolby Vision format but it says that it is “working towards bringing HDR to as many of our 4K UHD movies as possible, and we will continue to roll them out as we receive them”. A full list of HDR movies available on Vudu is available here (check each title for HDR10 / Dolby Vision). One example of a title being available in HDR10 as well as Dolby Vision is 'Wonder Woman'.

The Vudu app for Android TV has also gained support for Google Assistant.
