Sony has announced that the promised Dolby Vision update for its A1 OLED as well as Z9D, X94E, and X93E LCDs will start rolling out from the end of January 2018.
Dolby Vision for Sony TVs
When Sony announced its 2017 line-up at CES in January 2017, it also confirmed that it was working on adding Dolby Vision HDR support via a later firmware update. Following the update, Sony’s high-end TVs will support three HDR formats; HDR10, HLG, and Dolby Vision.
Dolby Vision is a premium HDR format that takes advantage of a novel dynamic metadata system to optimize HDR picture quality on a scene-by-scene or even frame-by-frame basis. All Hollywood studios, except 20th Century Fox, release movies in Dolby Vision format. In addition, Amazon and Netflix release TV series in the format.
The update applies to this year’s Sony A1 OLED, X94E, and X93E models (XE94 and XE93 in Europe) as well as last year’s Z9D (ZD9) LCD flagship.
The Japanese company had promised to roll out the update by the end of 2017 so it seems that it has been slightly delayed. The company has confirmed that the update is scheduled to roll out in early 2018 in the US and Europe.
- “We are happy to announce that the ZD9/A1/XE94/XE93 Dolby Vision update via network is scheduled to start in Europe from the end of January 2018 and will be rolled out gradually within February,” Sony announced.
There are no further details about the free update at this point so we do not know if the update will include the “full package”, meaning app and HDMI support. We will meet with Sony at CES 2018 next month so stay tuned for more information.
