For the first time on a PC, you can enjoy Netflix’s TV series and movies in High Dynamic Range. The company has added support for HDR on Windows 10 PCs.
The first step
This is only the first step but it is exciting that Netflix is finally bringing HDR to the PC ecosystem. Only a few years ago, video streaming from most premium services was limited to just 720p HD resolution on PC.
- “We are thrilled to announce the addition of High Dynamic Range (HDR) support on Windows 10 for both the Edge browser and the Netflix app. With this update, Netflix members who have a supported device and a premium plan can enjoy amazing Netflix movies and shows in HDR,” the company announced.
Netflix added support for 4K resolution on Windows 10 about a year ago. To enjoy Netflix in 4K HDR on a PC, you need a PC based on Intel’s 7th generation CPUs (Kaby Lake) as well as a HDR-capable display. You can use the Edge browser or the Netflix app on Windows 10. Netflix offers only HDR10 on PC, not Dolby Vision.
Netflix adds that in the PC world, it is “still early days for premium video features like 4K and HDR” but the company wants to help bring these features to more users by adding support for additional browsers in the future.
- “And this is just the beginning! Today, we have over 200 hours of HDR entertainment, and in 2018 even more HDR PCs will enter the market and support the growing number of Netflix originals.”
Netflix started rolling out support for HDR video in April 2016 and has since expanded it to a range of TVs and media players as well as mobile devices. You can now add Windows 10 PCs to the list.
