LG unveils 2018 monitors with 5K, 'Nano IPS', Thunderbolt 3, more

22 Dec 2017 | Rasmus Larsen |

In 2018, LG will offer three new monitors with features such as 4K and 5K resolution, “Nano IPS” technology, G-Sync, ‘DisplayHDR 600’ certification, and Thunderbolt 3.

Nano IPS LCD technology

The South Korean company has unveiled three new monitors that will set the tone for 2018. One of the keywords is “Nano IPS”, which is a filter for LCD displays that is already employed in LG’s high-end TV. The company explains that it adds “nanometer-sized particles to the screen’s LED to absorb excess light wavelengths“.

The Nano IPS technology will be available in all three new monitors.

32” 32UK950 features 4K resolution and 98% coverage of the DCI-P3 color space as well as Thunderbolt 3, allowing you to easily connect it to Macs and Macbooks. It is one of LG’s first monitor to be certified for VESA’s ‘DisplayHDR 600’ specification, but it is not actually HDR.

- “This monitor’s (32UK950) single Thunderbolt 3 cable transmits 4K content and sound while providing enough charge to power a 60W notebook, simplifying any work space. With its beautiful signature Edge-ArcLine Stand and stunning 4-Side Edge Borderless Design where the picture literally drops off the edge, there is no mistaking this LG monitor for anything else,” said LG.

34WK95U with 5K resolution

34” 34WK95U features 5K resolution (5120x2160 pixels) in the ultra-wide 21:9 aspect ratio as well as Thunderbolt 3. This monitor has also achieved DisplayHDR 600 certification – again, this does not guarantee HDR.

- “Most of us spend hundreds of hours in front of monitors every month and yet it’s one of the least likely products to get upgraded when higher productivity is desired,” said Chang Ik-hwan, head of LG’s IT business division. “With these latest premium monitors from LG, we wanted to communicate that LG is absolutely committed to delivering the best possible screen resolution and the best user experience on a desk or workspace.”

G-Sync gaming monitors

Lastly, LG will in 2018 launch a 34” 34GK950G with QHD resolution, Nano IPS technology and G-Sync. It is a monitor designed for gaming. No further details or photos were announced.

LG’s 2018 line-up of monitors will be showcased for the first time at CES 2018 in Las Vegas next month. FlatpanelsHD will be in Vegas for the show.
