Sony has rolled out Android 7.0, or Nougat, to its most recent TVs but owners of 2015 and early 2016 Sony TVs will have to wait until at least spring 2018 as the update has been postponed again.
Postponed again
Sony is the only manufacturer of Android TVs who has committed to updating all of its models to version 7.0 of the software. But it is taking a lot longer than anticipated.
The Android 7 update was released in May 2017 for late 2016 and all 2017 models. However, it is still not available for early 2016 and 2015 models. These are models such as X85D/XD85, X93D/XD93, and X94D/XD94 as well as all XC models.
The update has now been further postponed. The company says that an “updated schedule will be available by spring 2018”.
- "Currently, the Nougat firmware update is only available for a specific range of our TV line-up. We’re aware that this update is also highly anticipated on the rest of the models, and would like to give some insight into the roll-out schedule for the entire range of Sony’s Android TVs." Sony wrote in a statement.
The company added:
- “Our engineers are currently working on the Android 7.0 (Nougat) OS update for the remaining models. To ensure that the update is rolled-out smoothly across Europe, a lot of quality assurance (QA) testing is necessary.”
It is not clear when the update will be rolled out but based on Sony’s updated statement, it seems that owners must arm themselves with patience.
Sony is expected to unveil its 2018 line-up at CES 2018 a few weeks from now.
