Kodi now available on Xbox One

31 Dec 2017 | Rasmus Larsen |

The Kodi media player is rolling out as an app on the Xbox One consoles. It is free to download but there are still some limitations.

Full circle

Kodi started out as XBMC, short for Xbox Media Center – and XMBP before that – on Microsoft’s original Xbox console. With the launch of the app on Xbox One, it comes full circle.

Kodi is a media player app that offers an easy-to-use way to watch your locally-stored media files on the TV. It also offers a range of third-party add-ons to expand functionality in a number of ways.

The app has been under heavy fire recently as it is often used to power streaming boxes that provide access to piracy services. The company behind Kodi has been trying to distance itself from the illegal use cases but Kodi is still often associated with these although it is perfectly legal.

Popular alternatives to Kodi are Plex and Infuse.

Some limitations

Kodi says that some limitations apply to the current version of the Xbox One app.

- ”Due to the nature of how UWP works our hands are tied in some areas. Some parts are not even finished yet and our developers are still working on getting it up to the regular standard.”

The following limitations were highlighted:
  • Limited access to only what’s part of your Video and Music folders.
  • Network support is limited to only NFS:// shares.
  • No access to the Blu-ray drive to start the disc or even an attached storage drive.
  • Problems with certain general python modules that are used by add-ons

Kodi is currently rolling out to the app store on Xbox One. It is rolling out region-by-region so check back soon again if it is not yet available on your console.
