At CES 2018, Nvidia has announced an initiative to partner with Acer, Asus, and HP to create supersized 65” gaming displays, with 4K HDR and 120Hz G-Sync built-in.
Big Format Gaming Displays
Nvidia has dubbed them ”big format gaming displays”, or BFGDs. The screens will also have Nvidia Shield, the streaming player, integrated.
However, most importantly the BFGD will improve the gaming experience through 4K resolution, support for High Dynamic Range and up to 120Hz refresh rate (at 4K). The screens also support G-Sync, which is Nvidia’s adaptive frame rate system. The combination should significantly improve the visual experience compared to standard PC monitors.
- ”At the heart of BFGDs is the latest G-SYNC HDR technology that synchronizes the display’s 120Hz refresh rate to that of the game at every moment in time. This G-SYNC Variable Refresh Rate technology delivers a highly responsive, smooth, tear-free, immersive gaming experience unmatched by any display of this size,” Nvidia said.
This also includes ” ultra-low latency found in G-SYNC desktop gaming monitors” when gaming from PC, Android or another game console. Through the integrated Nvidia Shield, you can also stream PC games from a desktop or laptop via the Nvidia GameStream app.
Full array local dimming
Nvidia continued to say that the displays are based on LCD panels with a full array local dimming backlight. The can hit up to 1000 peak brightness and color the DCI-P3 color space. This is very different from typical edge-lit PC monitors that claim HDR support.
- “PC gamers expect high performance and instant response times, but, until now, they’ve been largely limited to traditional desktop displays,” said Matt Wuebbling, head of GeForce marketing at NVIDIA. “BFGDs change that. With NVIDIA’s latest technology built into these new displays, PC gamers can now experience their favorite titles in all the low-latency glory they deserve.”
Because there is a Nvidia Shield built-in you also get apps such as Amazon, Netflix, YouTube, and Hulu as well as games. The company will bundle the Shield remote and game controller in the package. In addtion, Google Assistant is built-in.
- ”With support for the Google Assistant, the entire experience can be controlled simply by using your voice. G-SYNC HDR technology also supports video playback at native framerates, including popular 23.976, 24 and 25 FPS formats. This matches the screen’s refresh rate to the video source’s actual frame rate, eliminating interpolation and presenting the video content as it was intended to be viewed by the director.”
Nvidia will partner with Acer, Asus, and HP to bring the ”big format gaming displays” to market this summer. Pricing details and further specifications will be announced later.
