The 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, will be shot and broadcast in 4K HDR. NBC has confirmed that it will broadcast the event in the format.

For the first time in 4K HDR

Besides the 2018 FIFA World Cup, parts of the 2018 Winter Olympics will be shot and distributed in 4K resolution and High Dynamic Range. This includes the opening ceremony, hockey, figure skating, ski jumping and snowboarding.

- “This is yet another first at an Olympic Games, and OBS is proud to continually provide and facilitate the very latest technology to its broadcast partners,” said Yiannis Exarchos, CEO of Olympic Broadcasting Services. “The performances of the best athletes in the World deserve to be captured with the best broadcast technology available.”

Japan’s NHK will help the Olympic Broadcasting Services shoot and distribute the content. NBC has already confirmed that it will make the content available in 4K HDR to viewers in the US.

- “The Olympics has always been a platform for the introduction of new broadcast technology,” said Gary Zenkel, President, NBC Olympics. “The availability of 4K High Dynamic Range coverage of Olympic ceremonies and competitions through our participating multi-channel distribution partners, will be a great showcase for this emerging advancement in the quality of televised sports coverage in the United States.”

More than 50 hours of virtual reality content will also be made available at the Winter Olympics.

The 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, will be shot and broadcast in 8K resolution, NHK has announced.

The 2018 Winter Olympics will be held in PyeongChang, South Korea, from February 9 to February 25.
