DTS announces wireless TV audio streaming via Play-Fi

02 Feb 2018 | Rasmus Larsen |

DTS’s Play-Fi protocol now supports wireless TV audio, meaning that you can connect speakers or soundbars wirelessly to a TV or another source. It is a free software update for compatible products.

Wireless and lossless audio

DTS wants to create a platform for wireless audio in the home. It laid the foundation with DTS Play-Fi that works over WiFi, and it is now extending the functionality to cover “whole-home TV audio streaming”.

- "We are excited to add whole-home TV audio streaming to the DTS Play-Fi ecosystem, allowing consumers to broadcast audio from their TV to other speakers without an echo or compromised video synchronization," said Dannie Lau, general manager, DTS Play-Fi, at Xperi. “Whether you’re hosting a Big Game watch party, or just listening to your favorite show while cooking, DTS Play-Fi provides a no-compromise whole-home experience for TV listening. Additional DTS Play-Fi partners will incorporate the technology into their DTS Play-Fi enabled products this year, giving consumers even more flexibility when selecting their home theater products."

DTS Play-Fi now also supports “streaming functionality like wireless surround sound, stereo pairing, music station presets, and audio/video synchronization”.

Besides support for TV audio, the company said that it offers “lossless multi-room wireless audio streaming” from services such as Amazon Music, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Juke, KKBox, Napster, Pandora, Qobuz, QQ Music, SiriusXM, Spotify, and Tidal as well as personal music libraries.

Wireless multiroom audio systems have more recently been expanded to cover TV audio. Apple, Bang & Olufsen, Sonos, Roku, and others are working on similar technologies that allow you to set up stereo or surround sound wirelessly. By connecting speakers wirelessly to a TV or video player, consumers gain flexibility.

The company added that its DTS Play-Fi is compatible with more than 200 speakers, soundbars, set-top boxes, receivers, and other types of products.

The free software update is available now for the products mentioned below. More information is available on play-fi.com.
