Sony reveals 2018 A8F OLED TV pricing

Sony’s new A8F OLED will cost $3800 for a 65-inch model, making it more expensive than the A1 OLED, which will remain on the market in 2018.

The A8F OLED (AF8 in Europe) has the exact same technical specifications as last year’s A1 OLED. The differences lie in design. A8F is also better suited for wall mounting.

Sony has replaced a single subwoofer in A1 with two in A8F but claims that audio performance is more or less on par. The new model still uses actuators to turn the actual OLED panel into front-firing speakers.

The A8F OLED should deliver some of the best picture quality that money can buy. OLED is a self-emitting display technology, meaning that each pixel generates its own light, enabling it to control light and colors very accurately. It runs Android TV, has 4K resolution, and will support three HDR formats; HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision. The latter “will be made available via a future firmware update by summer 2018”.



While many had expected A8F to be cheaper than A1, it will actually cost the same or more – at least at launch. The 55-inch model will carry a suggested retail price of $2,800 while the 65-inch model will cost $3,800, making it $300 more expensive than the A1.

Of course, when A1 was introduced about a year ago it carried a much higher price. Sony has slashed it repeatedly over the course of 2017 to compete with LG and other OLED TV manufacturers.

Pricing details for Europe have yet not been announced.

Sony A8F will be “available soon” in 55 and 65-inch sizes.
