Today at GDC 2018, HTC announced that it will launch the Vive Focus globally later this year. It will be the first ”6DOF” standalone VR headset.

HTC claims that this will be the first standalone VR headset with ”6 degrees of freedom” (6DOF) to be commercially available.
Vive Focus has an integrated processor (Snapdragon 835) so you no longer need to have it tethered to a PC or mobile device. It also has built-in tracking so you no longer need external tracking devices. It features an OLED display solution with 2880x1600 pixel resolution.
- ”Vive Focus is designed to appeal to a wider range of mass market audiences as well as commercial/enterprise users who want broad deployment and stunning VR experiences in a convenient and portable form factor,” the company said.
In addition, HTC will launch the Vive Pro headset for $799 in April. This is the successor to the original Vive headset that requires a PC. The price of original Vive headset is dropping by $100 to $499.
Pricing and availability for Vive Focus was not announced but HTC confirmed that it is ”bringing Vive Focus to the global markets later this year”.
