The latest update for the Vudu app on Apple TV has added support for 4K HDR streaming. Unlike iTunes, Vudu offers Disney’s movie library in 4K HDR quality.
Disney movies in 4K HDR
Apple iTunes started adding 4K HDR movies in September 2017 and now offers a long list of titles, except any movies from Disney. These are still stuck on HD quality as the companies have failed to reach an agreement.
With the latest update to Vudu there is now another way to enjoy Disney’s catalog in better picture quality via you Apple TV 4K. Disney’s movies are typically priced at $25 dollars in 4K HDR on Vudu.

To be clear, you cannot actually purchase or rent any movies from the Vudu app on Apple TV. You will need to rent movies on the website after which they will show up inside the Vudu app on Apple TV. This is done to avoid having Apple take a cut of revenue.
The company added that that you must “be sure to set default playback quality to UHD” to enjoy the best streaming quality.
Vudu is owned by Walmart and the app is free to download on Apple tvOS. It offers access to a catalog of more than 100,000 titles and is also part of the ‘Movies Anywhere’ initiative that lets you redeem digital codes.
