The LCD line-up spans from high-end models with Dolby Vision to more basic 4K TVs. LG’s 2018 LCD TVs are now shipping in the US and Europe.
A comprehensive LCD line-up
The TVs were unveiled at the CES show earlier this year and are now available to buy. The flagship SK9500 comes with a full array local dimming system whereas SK9000 in the US (SK8500 in Europe) has a scaled-down version of the system.
The more affordable SK8000/SK8100 range use edge LED but still offers support for Dolby Vision. LG is also quick to point out that it is the only TV manufacturer with support for a total of four HDR formats: HDR10, HLG, Dolby Vision, and Advanced HDR by Technicolor. The only one missing is Samsung’s HDR10+ format.
The SK ranges are sold as ”Super UHD” LCD TVs and are positioned just below the new OLED TVs that have also started shipping.
Midrange 4K TVs
If you step into the mid-range segments, you will find several UKxx ranges. These are more conventional 4K LCD TVs in sizes ranging from 43 to 86 inches. It should be noted that many of these use the company’s RGBW pixel structure that at times has lower effective resolution than 4K.
All of the new TVs feature LG’s webOS with access to popular apps such as Amazon, Netflix, HBO, Hulu, and YouTube. webOS has reached version 4.0 but only the 2018 models will get the latest version. There is no update planned for any previous models.
LG has completely abandoned 3D technology and there are no longer any curved TVs in the line-up. The UKxx ranges are mainstream models whereas the SKxx ranges are meant to compete with other high-end LCD TVs such as Samsung’s “QLED” LCD range and Sony’s X900F. The OLED models still represent the best LG has to offer.
