Samsung’s premium TVs for 2018 are now shipping in the US and Europe. The new LCD models are being sold as “QLED” TVs. Q9FN has full array local dimming whereas most of the other models are edge-lit.
Samsung launches new TVs
The TVs succeed last year’s models that landed hard. Samsung has reacted by implementing full array local dimming in its Q9FN flagship and by lowering prices. The company also offers unique design solutions such as an external ‘One Connect’ box that powers the TV via a single fiber optics cable.
The Q7 range is available in a flat version (USA and Europe) and a curved version (USA only). It offers many of the same features as Q9FN including the Tizen operating system with access to Amazon, HBO, Netflix, and other streaming services. Q7 has a standard edge LED backlighting system – like last year’s models. There is also a Q8 range that will feature a scaled-down zone dimming system in the US but a standard edge LED system in Europe.
Samsung is emphasizing that all of the 2018 Q models offer 4K resolution and support for HDR (High Dynamic Range), including the company’s own HDR10+ format that was developed as an open alternative to Dolby Vision. The Q models are meant to compete head-to-head with TVs based on OLED technology where each individual pixel can generate its own light.
Bang & Olufsen, LG, Loewe, Sony, Panasonic, Philips and other TV makers sell high-end TVs based on OLED technology but Samsung is sticking to LCD technology for now. The South Korean company attempted to mass produce OLED TVs back in 2012-13 but had to abandon the project due to low yields.
In addition to the premium Q models, Samsung will roll out a full portfolio of NUxx model ranges over the coming weeks and months.

Samsung Q9FN and Q7FN / Q7CN are available now in the US and Europe in sizes ranging from 55 to 75 inches. Q8 is currently rolling out and is expected to hit all markets in June. See prices and dealers below.
