Samsung’s new ’NU’ ranges will replace last year’s MU models. The 2018 mid-range 4K LCD TVs are now shipping in the US and Europe.
Samsung 2018 NU ranges
The NU8 model will include certain gaming-related technologies (VRR and FreeSync) that are also found in the more expensive Q ranges, whereas the NU7 range consists of more traditional 4K LCD TVs. NU7 will be available in various design versions.
The Korean manufacturer will continue to push curved TVs but there are also a significant number of flat models in the line-up. Compared to the more expensive Q ranges, you lose the one connection box, the quantum dot filter in the LCD panel, and most of the neat design features.
All of the new LCD TVs feature 4K resolution and support for Samsung’s HDR10+ format that has been developed as a royalty-free alternative to Dolby Vision. However, note that the entire NU line-up is using standard edge-lit LCD panels that cannot reproduce High Dynamic Range video. Hollywood and game developers are increasingly embracing HDR so if you want the best viewing experience you should opt for one of Samsung’s full array local dimming LCD TVs or the competing OLED TVs.

The TVs are based on Samsung’s Tizen operating system that offers access to Amazon, HBO, Netflix, YouTube, and other streaming services. Tizen has reached version 4.0 that will be available only on this year’s models. Previous TVs will not be updated.
