'Minecraft: Story Mode' game coming to Netflix as interactive series

Minecraft: Story Mode from Telltale Games will come to Netflix where it will become an extension of Netflix’s interactive adventures that launched last year, the company has confirmed to Techradar.

A game turned interactive series

Telltale Games is a video game developer who sells “story-driven games” such as The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us, and Game of Thrones. However, when the studio’s first title arrives on Netflix it will instead be characterized as an interactive series.

- “We can confirm Minecraft: Story Mode is a licensed 5-episode interactive narrative series coming to our service this fall,” a Netflix spokesperson confirmed to TechRadar.

The studio’s games were already in a grey zone between game and narrative series. They play as a narrated story but the player must on occasion make choices that affect the outcome. Netflix clearly believes that there is a bigger audience for these types of experiences that are currently sold as games on platforms such as iOS, Android, PlayStation, and Xbox.

In June 2017, Netflix launched an initiative to bring interactive storytelling to its platform. These series let the viewer decide, with the remote control, how the story unfolds. The first such series was Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale, which has since been joined by two other series. Soon, Minecraft: Story Mode will be added to the line-up.

- “It's an extension of our other interactive stories we have on our service like Stretch Armstrong: The Breakout, Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale and Buddy Thunderstruck: The Maybe Pile,'” the company added.

Netflix said that it has no intention of going into gaming. No plans have been announced for Telltale’s other games but the two companies confirm that Telltale will develop a game based on Stranger Things that will be sold separately as a standalone game.

Netflix’s interactive content is available on Smart TVs, game consoles, select media players, and iOS. It is not currently supported on Android, Apple TV (tvOS) or Chromecast.
