Pioneer’s first Ultra HD Blu-ray player will be called UDP-LX500. The company is also teasing another device that could be an audiophile version.
Pioneer LX500 UHD Blu-ray
The player had been hidden on a veil on Pioneer’s Japanese website. The company has yet to reveal technical specifications but from the pictures it appears to be based on the cabinet from the BDP-LX58 (a standard Blu-ray player), as noted by German site 4KFilme.de.
Of course, UDP-LX500 will conform to the UHD Blu-ray specification meaning that it will support 4K resolution and HDR10 as well as object-based audio formats such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. Pioneer has not commented on whether it will support Dolby Vision or HDR10+ yet. The player has display on the front along with playback buttons and a USB port.
There is second device hidden behind UDP-LX500 on Pioneer’s Japanese website. It could be either a lower-end UHD Blu-ray player or a higher-end audiophile version. Oppo recently announced that it is leaving the disc player business so other companies are now looking to fill the void. Panasonic has also unveiled a high-end UHD Blu-ray player in the form of UB9000.
Pioneer has yet to announce pricing and release details so at this point it is not clear if UDP-LX500 will be available in the US and Europe. The IFA 2018 show in Berlin is only a few months away so perhaps Pioneer has a surprise in store for us.
