Samsung launches The Frame 2018

03 Jul 2018 | Rasmus Larsen |

The upgraded version of The Frame – Samsung’s digital picture frame TV – has more digital art to choose from, a refreshed user interface, Bixby voice assistant, and support for HDR10+.

More art & new features

Samsung’s lifestyle TV, The Frame, was introduced last year. It functions as a regular TV when it is on and in use, and a digital art frame when it is not in use. Users can buy additional art pieces from an art store on the TV.

Samsung has now announced an upgraded version for 2018 under the straightforward name ‘The Frame 2018’. It still has an external connector box.

- “We designed The Frame for consumers who love the function of a big, beautiful 4K UHD TV but struggle to design their room around an empty black screen when the TV is turned off,” said Dave Das, Senior Vice President of Consumer Electronics for Samsung Electronics America. “You can travel the world and still be hard-pressed to discover all of the art that is now available on The Frame. It gives consumers the freedom to design the room of their dreams, and the flexibility to change that design whenever they like.”

The upgraded version still features an edge-lit 4K LCD panel. In addition, it now supports HDR10+, which is Samsung’s royalty-free alternative to Dolby Vision. It comes with upgraded smart features, including the company’s quick setup guide that allows users to easily set up the TV from a smartphone. It also has the Universal Guide and Bixby voice assistant.

Of course, every single one of those features could easily be added to the previous version of The Frame but Samsung continues to refuse to provide software updates for its Tizen TV platform.

Samsung said that there are now more than 800 works of art available from the store, including some 30 iconic pieces of photography from The New York Times. This announcement comes just days after LG partnered with Tripadvisor to bring digital photography from around the world to its TVs.

The Frame 2018 is available today in 55” for $2000 and 65” for $2800. It can hang flush to the wall and comes with one of four bezel options (black, white, walnut and beige wood). A floor stand is also available.
