Walmart rumored to launch Vudu-branded Netflix competitor

23 Jul 2018 | Rasmus Larsen |

It is not just Disney. Walmart is reportedly also preparing to enter the subscription video space to compete head-to-head with Amazon, Netflix and others. The service may launch as early as Q4 this year, according to Variety.

A Vudu-branded service

Walmart is currently competing with Apple iTunes and Amazon’s movie stores through the Vudu-branded service that it acquired in 2010. The same entertainment division is developing a subscription based service to compete with Netflix, sources have told Variety.

The new subscription streaming service will reportedly be Vudu-branded, and include movies, TV shows, and original content, although it is not clear exactly what that entails.

Last year, Walmart added a free option to its Vudu service that show video commercials during movie playback.

The company apparently considering moving into the subscription space in early 2017 but put the project on ice. Variety now believes that the service could launch in Q4 2018 but notes that plans may once again change.

Walmart is believed to be targeting a price of $8 dollars per month.
