Samsung has announced two new curved monitors as part of the CJG5 series. The Korean company has set out to make affordable monitors for gaming.
CJG5 without FreeSync
Samsung says that 32-inch C32JG5 and 27-inch C27JG5 feature “key gaming technologies such as WQHD high resolution, curved display, 144Hz refresh rate and a high contrast ratio”.
We are not entirely sure that a 3000:1 contrast ratio qualifies as “high contrast ratio” but it is an obvious reference to LG's IPS LCD panel that has even lower contrast. Neither of these LCD panel types can deliver HDR (High Dynamic), which is one of the most significant technical trends to emerge in gaming in many years. However, Samsung is not trying to position CJG5 as HDR monitors either.
Gamers will perhaps also miss FreeSync or any type of adaptive frame rate technology. The monitors are designed for gaming on a budget, the company said.
- “Due to the rapidly increasing demands of gaming monitors, we sought to offer competitively-priced gaming monitors for more users to benefit from premium technology,” said Seog-gi Kim, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung. “With the technological expertise that we have accumulated throughout the years, we are making efforts to accelerate the gaming features such as 144Hz and high WQHD resolution, which will be appreciated by the mass market.”
If you can live without an adaptive frame rate system, you get a curved screen with a VA LCD panel with 2560x1440 pixels. It has a maximum refresh rate of 144Hz and a 4 ms response time. It can be connected via HDMI (2.0) or DisplayPort (1.2). It also has a headphone jack.
Samsung said that the monitors come with 'Game' and 'Cinema' picture modes that “optimize the black gamma level, contrast, sharpness and saturation”. These are meant to compensate for the panel’s shortcomings. There is also a game-dedicated on-screen menu for quick adjustment.
The two monitors were unveiled at Gamescom 2018 in Cologne, Germany. They will be available in the third quarter of 2018 at “a reasonable and affordable price”, Samsung said. The monitors are already listed on amazon.com.
